[VARIVAS] Seabass Shock Leader [Fluorocarbon]

The highest level of sensitivity, strength, and abrasion resistance has been achieved by using premium fluorocarbons.
The non-stretching characteristics of this shock leader are perfect for bottom lures and quick motion lures.
Furthermore, the thin horizontal spool makes this fluorocarbon shock leader one of the best in its class.

[Thin horizontal spool]
Even the greatest lines created with cutting-edge technology were wasted by spools that created unintended twists and flattened the lines.
The horizontal spools were invented to solve that problem.
However, thin horizontal spools were thought to be impossible, due to technical limitations. But we, VARIVAS, are dedicated to providing our users with the best lines in the very best condition.
Our company has designed and developed a spool that is the perfect size for sea bass fishing lines and has a horizontal roll to maintain the best condition of the lines.
Take the opportunity to see for yourself how much potential this new line and technology has.

Discussing the Differences and Attractions of VARIVAS Sea Bass Shock Leader [Nylon] and [Fluorocarbon]

Kazuharu Asakawa

Kazuharu Asakawa One of Japan’s leading sea bass masters, Kazuharu Asakawa, relies on the ‘VARIVAS Sea Bass Shock Leader [Nylon]’ as his main leader.
There is a deep reason why this leader, who has gained the trust of the uncompromising Asakawa, became his main leader.
Additionally, the only fluorocarbon leader that Asakawa approves of is the ‘VARIVAS Sea Bass Shock Leader [Fluorocarbon].’
Discover the secret of this sea bass-specific fluorocarbon leader, which eliminates the “negative” aspects of the material characteristics, achieving a “smooth” and “soft feel.”

Sea Bass Shock Leader for Conquering Tough Opponents

With the ‘VARIVAS Avani Sea Bass PE Max Power X8’ as the main line, Kazuharu Asakawa’s leader strategy starts with using [Nylon Leader] and [Fluorocarbon Leader] according to the situation.
“I use both nylon and fluorocarbon types for leaders. However, the frequency of use is higher for nylon,” he says.
The reason lies in nylon leaders’ slight “cushioning” characteristic during casting and hitting.
“When using a nylon leader, I pair it with a softer rod. When I take back a flexible rod, the nylon leader stretches a bit, allowing for a smooth cast,” he explains.
Even a small difference in leader length becomes noticeable.
Additionally, the flexibility unique to nylon helps when the sea bass is hooked, acting as a moderate suspension.
“This reduces the chance of losing the sea bass,” he says. However, he asserts that more than nylon leaders will suffice in tough sea bass games.

The Appeal of Sea Bass Shock Leader [Nylon]

A nylon leader with unbeatable strength, flexibility, moderate elongation, and abrasion resistance, Asakawa believes that the conventional wisdom of using fluorocarbon leaders for abrasion resistance is now outdated.
“The ‘VARIVAS Sea Bass Shock Leader [Nylon]’ I use is exceptionally strong.
It’s made with a special VEP manufacturing method far exceeding the usual nylon strength.
Therefore, even in fields with abrasion, nylon leaders generally have no problem.
I never use fluorocarbon leaders in land-based games due to concerns about strength.
The sea bass shock leader [nylon] I use is that strong,” he says.
Abrasion resistance is necessary for sea bass games, but this leader also maintains natural flexibility and moderate nylon stretch, making it Asakawa’s go-to main leader.
“VARIVAS could likely produce a non-stretch nylon leader, but they intentionally included nylon’s inherent flexibility and moderate stretch, combined with overwhelming strength, creating an unbeatable nylon leader,” he confidently asserts.

The Appeal of Sea Bass Shock Leader [Fluorocarbon]

A sea bass-specific fluorocarbon leader with excellent abrasion resistance and flexibility.
Nylon’s inherent material characteristics can create slight “blind spots.”
To fill these “blind spots,” Asakawa uses a fluorocarbon leader.
In boat games, where there are more opportunities to target structures densely covered with barnacles and mussels, the chances of the leader contacting the structure are significantly higher.
“Compared to land-based fishing, the rate of leader contact with structures in boat games feels more than five times higher.
In such cases, the strong abrasion resistance unique to fluorocarbon stands out,” he explains.
“Therefore, I only use the VARIVAS Sea Bass Shock Leader [Fluorocarbon].
This leader is extremely flexible and soft for fluorocarbon, which does not interfere with lure operability, making it easier to execute precise strategies.”

Asakawa’s Nylon and Fluorocarbon Usage Techniques

Asakawa skillfully and delicately uses the VARIVAS Sea Bass Shock Leader series, both “nylon” and “fluorocarbon,” depending on the situation, such as river sea bass fishing.
“I control the range in river games by adjusting the leader length and material.
Nylon and fluorocarbon have different specific gravities, so the range changes even when using the same lure.
Additionally, changing the leader length alters the resistance from the current, making the range control more noticeable.
This combination of factors allows for precise range control,” he explains.
To simplify, he considers dividing the river range into four sections: for the top range, he uses a 60-70 cm nylon leader; for the second from the top, a 60-70 cm fluorocarbon leader; for the third range, a 130 cm nylon leader; and for the bottom range, a 130 cm fluorocarbon leader.
“When drifting in midstream of large rivers, using the above leader system makes range control easier and is highly recommended,” he advises.

Summary

“Nylon and fluorocarbon leaders each have characteristics due to the different materials.
In my fishing style, the sea bass shock leader [nylon] is the main one, but many anglers use the sea bass shock leader [fluorocarbon] as their main leader.
I recommend enjoying sea bass games by smartly utilizing the advantages of both leaders,” says Asakawa.
