| How to Choose Spinning Reel Handle Properly (Spool Number 1000-4000) |
| Single Handle |
Usually, when you buy spinning reel, most of it has single handle as standard parts.
It is easy to use for all of anglers, but you can prevail much more reel potential by customizing it in accordance with your fishing style.
Advantage:
As handle weight is lighter and has quick response, it easily enables you to do sensitive action like stop-and-go, stop the lure quickly or move it quicker.
When you feel fish bite, you can turn your reel handle quickly, collect your extra line slack and do retrieve hooking. It enables you to do a aggressive "Kake (Hooking)" style.
If you prefer power fighting, you can choose larger size knob and attach it for your reel handle.
Disadvantage:
The handle is automatically rotated by it's knob weight, so you need to used to it when you do a EGING or other fishing which special line slack technique is required.
Think your wrist structure, down action is pushing the handle knob and up action is lifting handle knob. Normally you put stress on the knob when you down the handle and stronger power is added, and reeling speed is faster. On the other hand, when you up the handle, reeling speed is apt to go slower.
Also, as handle knob has weight role of the handle, knob moves like pendulum and handle tends to turn faster than angler's fingertip. When it up, the power will be lower. That means up and down speed will be different during handle goes around. Hard practice is required for mastering steady slow retrieve.
If handle rotation is choppy, blurring is to be occurred at your hands. This small blurring makes rod tip's one bigger. To be honest, fishing line tension(tense or loosen) is depending on this rod tip blurring.
| Double Handle |
Double handle is broadly known as EGING handle, however, there are lots of advantage of changing your handle into double one and use it. Recent years, fan users are increasing due to the improved lighter weight of it.
Advantage:
As double handle's length from one knob to the other is the same length and that means it's balance is 50:50. Those factor enable angler to have steady retrieve. Besides, this structure enables you to keep stable speed easily under slow retrieve condition.
Once the handle rotates stably, as your reel is not blurred at your hand, this result in preventing rod tip blurring.
Since your rod tip is in a good condition with having perpendicular tension, you can have rod tip better work when you have fish bite and can get sensitive bite from fish, what is called, "Kuwase and Nose".
In case of spinning reel which has lever brake for reverse rotating function, angler does not give extra fishing pressure for fish by having smooth handle reverse rotation and line releasing.
As double handle is not automatically rotated by its weight, better line slack control is achieved for EGING.
Disadvantage:
Total weight is to be heavier than single hand.
Right after you use double handle, sometimes your hand which hold a knob hits to the other knob. Due to the same reason, too large size handle knob setting is not suitable for double handle.

Handle weight:
The lighter the weight, the more sensitive. Also it causes less subject to break the balance with reel body.
Handle length:
(Short) Heavy reeling comfort ＞ As retrieve sensitivity is getting higher, it specializes in slow retrieve.
(Long) Light reeling comfort ＞ As it is suitable for power fighting or high speed retrieve, there is good speed advantage for picking up lures.
* High gear ratio reel's reeling comfort is heavier than normal gear ratio reel. (This is the same theory of bicycle gearshift.) Hence, high gear ratio reel has one size longer than normal gear ratio reel as a standard handle. By doing so, it seems like that longer handle has good advantage against shorter one, but shorter handle is suitable when sensitive slow retrieve is frequently required.
Adequate tackle balance is existed, (i.e.) shorter rod resulted in less tiredness and have a flexibility.
* With regards to handle weight, since handle knob weight is included into each maker's handle spec, it is not easy to say unconditionally which handle is the lightest one.
Especially, it depends on handle knob material (i.e. Plastic? Aluminium? Titanium? EVA? Wood?).
Total handle knob weight will be changed totally in accordance with knob's material.
